Airbus Logs First New Orders In Three Months

Two operators placed orders for Airbus aircraft in July marking the manufacturer’s first orders in three months.

An undisclosed customer and Lufthansa Technik, the modification arm of Lufthansa, ordered two A320 family aircraft each.

Demand for new aircraft completely dried up following the coronavirus pandemic and subsequent drop in passenger demand, biting plane manufacturers hard.

But Airbus has begun to show signs of slow recovery, with orders for the year, after cancellations, now standing at 302 aircraft.

Airbus delivered 49 planes in July, all A220s and A320s, including two A220-300 to Air Canada and Egypt Air and 47 A320neos to Middle East Airlines and Vistara through Air Lease Corporation.

The fact that all of Airbus’ deliveries were narrow-bodies highlights the fact that operators are still reluctant to take delivery of long-haul aircraft, which will unlikely be able to fly profitably for some time yet with passenger demand as it is.

Airbus in its quarterly update announced that it is cutting production of its A350 wide-body down to five jets a month after reporting a second-quarter operating loss of $1.4 billion.

Commercial aircraft deliveries for H1 were half of what they were compared to the same period in 2019. Meanwhile, Airbus’ revenues decreased to $22.2 billion in the first half of 2020.

So far in 2020, Airbus has delivered 245 jets.
